Description

Pandanus amaryllifolius: Pandan or screw pine.
The aromatic leaves are often used in flavouring food.


The leaves of the screw pine have small thorns towards the apex along the margins and midrib. A freshly cut leaf has a delightful fragrance described by Rump like that of new hay or new rice. The plant never flower and is propaganated by cuttings.

Origin
A widely cultivated plant in various parts of Malaysia, it is probably native to India.

Uses
The leaves are used as flavouring in cooking. Juice extracted can be used as an essence in cake making or the entire leaf used with coconut water (santan) and rice to make nasi-lemak.
