Moringaceae

Horse radish tree; kelur, (M); muruggal, (T).
Moringa pterigosperma Gaertn. (Moringaceae)
(M. oleifera Lam.)

Description

Moringa pterigosperma: Horse radish tree

A small tree with tuberous roots and fern-like foliage. In our local market like those at Geylang Serai or Kandang Kerbau, the leaves and the fruits are often sold to Indians and Malays. The leaves are 3-4 times pinnately compound, leaflets are oval shaped and attrached to a stalk with a swollen base. The half ripe pods 'kachang kelur', about 30 cm long, 3 cm broad, are often called 'Drumsticks'. The pungent essence in all parts of the plant is distinctive.

Origin

This tree was found wild in Northern India and has spread to various parts of the tropics through cultivation. It was known to Sanskrit writers as a medicinal plant.

Uses

The leaves are eaten boiled in curries. The immature fruits are scraped to remove the tough skin and cut into pieces and boiled. On accountr of the biting taste similar to allyl compounds of mustard and horse radish, the Eurpoeans in the tropics use its roots as a seasoning in place of horse-radish (the root of a cruciferous herb, Armoracia lapathifolia) and named it the Horse radish tree.
