MANGOSTEEN

Local/Malay Name : Manggis
Scientific Name : Garcinia mangostana Linn. THE TREE

The mangosteen is an evergreen tree about 10 to 25m tall with a dense pyramidal crown. The fruits produced are apomictic. The fruit is about 6 to 7cm in diameter, round but slightly flattened at the ends. It has a smooth thick, firm rind, pale green when immature and turning dark purple or red-purple when ripe. Enclosed by the rind is the edible pulp in 4 - 8 white segments. The flavour is slightly acidic but sweet and delicious. Each fruit has 1 to 2 seeds.

CULTIVAR

There are no identified clones since the seeds are apomictic.

SOIL AND WEATHER REQUIREMENTS

Mangosteen grows well on a wide range of soils provided it is well drained. It prefers clay or sandy loam soil with high organic matter content and pH of 5.0 - 6.5. Mangosteen thrives well in the tropical rainforests which receive 2000 - 2500mm of rainfall. It grows best in warm, humid and non-seasonal rainfall areas.

PROPAGATION

Traditionally, mangosteen has been propagated by seeds. Recently budgrafting has been successful in propogating the plants. Grafted plants are transplanted to the field about 6 months after the budgrafting. The planting holes are 60cm x 60cm x 60cm and the planting distance is about 10m. Each hole is filled with topsoil mixed with well dried cow dung/chicken dung and CIRP. The plants are shaded and watered regularly, especially during dry weather, until well established.

FERTILIZER

For years two to five N:P:K in the ratio of 15:15:15 is applied but from the sixth year onwards N:P:K:Mg in the ratio of 12:12:17:2+TE is applied.

WEEDING

Weeding manually is done every three months for the first three years.

PRUNING

No pruning is necessary apart from the occasional removal of dead or diseased wood.

PESTS AND DISEASES

Mangosteen is relatively free of pests and diseases. Gamboge disorder causes the branches and fruit to exude a yellow resin which may cause bitterness of the fruit if the arils are affected.

HARVESTING

The Mangosteen will start to bear fruits from 7-12 years after planting. The grafted plants fruit when they are about six years old. Mangosteen begins to mature when reddish spots begin to develop on the fruit skin and is ready for harvesting when the skin turns purplish to black.

YIELD

The yield starts with a production of 60 fruits per tree increasing steadily as the tree grows older, reaching the peak at 1,800 fruits per tree from the twenty-second year onwards.

USES

Fresh consumption Processed products: juice and jam.
