Description

Mint
A perennial fragrant herb which forms an abundance of short upright shoots. The leaves are ovate 3-4 cm long.

Origin
Mentha species are found in the more temperate parts of the Old World, the Peppermint, M. piperita, is the most important economic plant in the genus. The species of Mentha form hybirds easily. The variety that occurs in Java is var. javanica Hook. f. The mint cultivated in the Malay peninsula and Singapre is M. arvensis but does not occur wild. It is a native of S. Europe.

Uses
Mint is used in salads, to flavour laksa and as a medicine. Mint leaves are sold in dried or fresh form by local Chinese pharmacies.

Description

Sweet Basil
A shrubby herb with opposite, lanceolate leaves. The leaves are of a light green colour with a strong aromatic smell when bruised. There are several cultivated varieties (and species) and these differ in strength of flavour and colour of foliage.

Origin
It is found in all warmer parts of the world and common in Malaysian gardens. O. basilicum reached the Greeks with a reputation which obtained for it the name 'royal' because it was used in a balm of special esteem in Persia.

Uses
To a large extent, the plant is used by Malays as a flavouring herb, for stuffing poultry and meat or as a pot-herb. The volatile oil in the leaves is a common remedy for coughs. The foliage is also eaten as a leaf vegetable by Malays.

Description

Indian Borage. The leaves emit a very strong aroma when handled.
A succulent perennial herb that can reach 50 cm in height with fleshy leaves in opposite pairs. It occasionally produces pale violet flowers.

Origin
A plant cultivated and running wild in Malaysia. It is probably a native of India.

Uses

Leaves are mainly used in stuffing and for flavouring meat, also as a substitute for sage. Its strong smelling aromatic leaves are used medicinally by Indians as a cure for coughs.
