Umbelliferae, Ketumbar Jawa

Ketumbar Jawa, (M).
Eryngium Foetidum L. (Umbelliferae)

Description

Ketumbar Jawa. Sometimes used as a substitute for garland chrysanthemum because of the 'bug-like' taste.
It is an erect herb about 30-40 cm tall. The long lanceolate fresh but stiff green leaves have finely serrated margins and form a rosette. Crushed leaves give off a strong bug-like smell.

Origin
The herb was brought into cultivation in European gardens in the seventeenth century. The Chinese are instrumental in distributing it throughout the East.

Uses
It is used as a flavouring for food, in curries and also as a medicine. It is often adopted by the Chinese as a substitute for coriander.
