Description

West Indian Pea Tree. Fruits, flowers and leaves are edible.
A small, quick growing shrub or small tree about 6 m tall with graceful foliage. The odd pinnate leaves are 15-30 cm long with 41-61 ovate leaflets. Flowers are large, creamy white. There is a red-flowered variety (var. coccinea). The narrow pods are 30 cm or more long and contain up to 50 small brownish seeds.

Origin
It is a native of tropical North Eastern Asia and planted widely from Africa to Pacific. It is commonly seen in Malay kampongs.

Uses
The young leaves are stripped from the stalks and lightly boiled or steamed or served as a vegetable in curries. The young pods are also eaten. The white flowers that are eaten contain a considerable amount of sugar and iron and are said to taste like mushrooms. Flowers of the red-flowered variety are bitter and hence, it is only used as an ornamental.
